What Are You Afraid Of? Let's Learn About Phobias!

Are you afraid of spiders? Do you feel nervous in small spaces? Or maybe you don't like looking down from high places?

We all have things that scare us. But sometimes, a fear can be very strong. In English, we call this a phobia (恐怖症).

What Does "Phobia" Mean?

A phobia is a very strong fear of something, such as an animal, a place, or a situation.

The word phobia comes from the Greek word phobos, meaning "fear."

Many English words for fears end in -phobia.

Let's learn some examples!

6 Phobias You Might Hear About in English

English WordMeaning日本語
ArachnophobiaFear of spidersクモ恐怖症
AcrophobiaFear of heights高所恐怖症
ClaustrophobiaFear of small or closed spaces閉所恐怖症
AgoraphobiaFear of situations where escape may be difficult広場恐怖症
Social phobiaStrong fear of social situations社交不安症
AviophobiaFear of flying飛行機恐怖症

Some of these words are quite difficult to pronounce! Don't worry. Even native English speakers often use simpler expressions in everyday conversations.

For example, instead of saying "I have acrophobia," you can simply say:

"I'm afraid of heights."(高いところが怖いです。)

How Do We Talk About Phobias?

Here are three useful ways to talk about your fears.

1. I'm afraid of + noun / -ing

  • I'm afraid of spiders.(クモが怖いです。)
  • I'm afraid of flying.(飛行機に乗るのが怖いです。)
  • I'm afraid of speaking in public.(人前で話すのが怖いです。)

2. I have a phobia of + noun / -ing

  • I have a phobia of spiders.
  • I have a phobia of flying.

This expression describes a very strong fear, not just something you dislike.

3. I'm + adjective

Some phobia words also have an adjective form.

  • I have claustrophobia. → I'm claustrophobic.
  • I have arachnophobia. → I'm arachnophobic.

Both forms are correct!

Let's Practice!

Imagine you're talking with a friend.

A: Are you afraid of anything?

B: Yes! I'm really afraid of spiders. How about you?

A: I'm afraid of heights. I don't like tall buildings!
