Søren Kierkegaard was a philosopher. He was a pioneer in a school of philosophy known as Existentialism. This is a view that considers a person's individual experience as a human in this world and how life is actually experienced rather than relying solely on abstract philosophical systems. Existentialism argues that humans must confront the question of meaning for themselves rather than relying on predetermined answers; they must take responsibility for their choices and actions. Even amongst existentialists, however, there are different types of thinking. Kierkegaard believed that the ultimate meaning of life was to be found in God. Some French philosophers developed other views and beliefs regarding ultimate meaning such as Albert Camus who wrestled with the idea of Absurdism. Kierkegaard wrote many famous works of which a few are Either/Or, Fear and Trembling, and The Sickness Unto Death.
