If you want your English to sound more natural, make sure you know how to use filler words! They give you time to think of the next thing to say or add flavor to your speech.

Uh or Um (when you are thinking)
If you are thinking about what to say, "uh" or "um" are the most common filler words, I think. Some Japanese people I meet tilt their head while they think without saying anything, but as my experience as an American, being silent like that can seem a little awkward. So be sure to say "uh" and do a smaller head tilt.

Steve: When did you get that old hat you always wear?
Mark: Uhh...Yeah, a long time ago. I guess 5 years ago.


Uh or Um (when you are showing agitation)
You can also use these if someone says something weird or mean to you.

Ralph: How long have you been pregnant?
Phoebe: Um, I'm not pregnant.
Ralph: Ohhh...Sorry!

like
You can use "like" almost anywhere in a sentence. This can make your speech more casual or young-sounding. Teenagers and surfers are seen as saying "like" a lot, but people of all ages say it!

Xander: Hey Meg. Do you like know how long this terrible movie will like keep going?
Meg: No idea. I like really want to get some popcorn though.

Go check out how common these filler words are! Watch a short clip of a TV show or movie and count how many times they say "um," "uh," or "like."
